Spider Girl and the Spread of Conjunctivitis.
“EVEN as Singaporeans worry about a dengue epidemic, another infectious disease
is on the rise – conjunctivitis, or “sore eyes”.
But the Health Ministry (MOH) says that even though there has been an increase
in cases since July, there is “no evidence of an imminent conjunctivitis
outbreak”.
According to data published on the MOH website, polyclinics consistently saw a
higher than average number of cases per week from early July onwards. The
average weekly number of cases for the year so far is 760.
The number then peaked at 1,495 between July 29 to Aug 4, breaking through the
MOH’s epidemic threshold of 1,353 cases. It has subsequently dropped, but is
currently still above the warning level.
While conjunctivitis numbers have peaked twice before this year, this current
spike is the highest so far.
Conjunctivitis is fairly common in Singapore. The eye infection is caused by
certain strains of bacteria and viruses. Usually easily treatable, it is only
in severe cases – caused by complications – that permanent damage to vision can
occur.
A Straits Times check with general practitioners indicated that they too saw
more recent cases. Nine out of 11 clinics said they had seen at least twice as
many cases in the last few weeks.
Associate Professor Au Eong Kah Guan, head of ophthalmology and visual sciences
at Alexandra Hospital, said that the spike in cases could be due to a new type
of virus.
“Or, it could be an older virus which is making the rounds again,” he said.
Re-infections by old viruses are common as any immunity built up against them
can wear off.
An MOH spokesman said the spike was “not significant” as the numbers have not
been consistently exceeding the epidemic threshold.
They advised infected people to properly dispose of anything soiled by saliva,
mucus and tears, and avoid sharing common household articles with non-infected
persons.“
Hmmm I think you might have been reading the newspaper this few days, and spotted this article on conjunctivitis. Well, I’m sure if you’re still attending school you might have noticed some of your classmates may have sore eyes and such. For me, there was the bugger Zhiyang who was absent for two days because he had conjunctivitis, and well, let’s just say it was expected, because he had been fiddling with his cool specs all day long. And I doubt he had a good sense of hygiene too.
But how is this stupid eye infection spread. As usual, due to Singaporeans’ being supremely unconcerned of hygiene.
Let me introduce to you, our ambassador of the “Stop Conjunctivitis Campaign”.
Yup. My hero. The girl who was climbing up and down a pillar in the middle of a hawker centre.
Kinda like the Marvel heroine, Spider Girl!
Haha, the striking resemblance. Both roam the neighbourhoods, both climb the walls.
However, the first, bring real-life, is susceptible to the “saliva, mucus and tears” that is on the pillars, while the second is the invulnerable, will never die although you whack her a few thousand times, and of course, would not die after climbing so many walls.
Parents, listen up. Don’t let your kid touch surfaces all around him/her. Then touch their eyes. It gives them cute, pus-oozing rabbit eyes. Oh, oh! You might want to do it after all. It can make your kid more outstanding and unique. Isn’t that all parents’ dreams?
